Implications of Independence for Scottish Civil Society Organsiations
The Scottish Government is committed to holding a referendum on independence in Autumn 2014. While the Carnegie UK Trust does not have a position on independence, it is clear that any decision will have profound implications for Scottish civil society.
In collaboration with
Professor Richard Kerley, the Trust is conducting this timely piece of research to explore the extent to which Scottish civil society organisations have considered the impact that Scottish constitutional change may or may not have upon their organisations' operational functions.
This study is comprised of two key components:
- A short online survey of civil society organisations operating within Scotland. The purpose of this survey will be to ascertain the composition and operational function of civil society organisations in Scotland.
- Telephone interviews with a selection of senior figures within civil society organisations. The purpose of this component is to explore in more depth, the level of planning currently taking place among organisations ahead of possible Scottish constitutional change.
The Trust will hold discussion workshops later in 2012 to outline the key findings from the research. These workshops will also act as a means of encouraging civil society organisations and local and national government figures to engage in discussions about the ways in which organisations should plan for the possibility of constitutional change.
A report will be available late 2012.
