William Thomson, great grandson of Scots American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, previous Chair of the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust and now our Honorary President.  Formerly in shipping, now a director of retail and publishing companies.

Melanie Leech, Chair

Director General, Food and Drink Federation; previously served in a range of government departments, including Cabinet Office, Department of Culture Media and Sport and HM Customs. She was seconded from the civil service to the Association of Police Authorities as Executive Director.

Angus Hogg, Vice-Chair

(Convener of Finance and Organisation Sub-Committee) Past Chairman now Trustee, Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts, Director of Eden River Associates Ltd Business Consultants, Trustee Lauder College Educational Trust.

Diana Brittan

(Chair of the Carnegie Rural Development Community of Practice Steering Group.) Diana has held a number of public appointments including chairing the Community Fund. She now chairs two charities, Independent Age and the Connection at St Martins (a homeless charity), and also Chairs a regional committee of the British Lung Foundation.

Richard Davies

Lately a Management Board Director at the Welsh Assembly Government, and successively Head of the Departments for Training and Education, and Public Services and Performance. Previously worked in various UK Central Government Departments and overseas. Currently holds non executive, lay, and advisory appointments variously with HMCS, RICS, GMC(UK), SRA, RPSGB. Visiting Professor at the University of Glamorgan. Honorary Member of the British Council. Trustee of Regent's College, London, and of the Nationwide Foundation.

James Doorley

Currently Assistant Director of the National Youth Council of Ireland with responsibility for Advocacy and Representation. He has been a Board member of the European Youth Forum since 2002 and is currently serving as Vice President. He was appointed as Chairman of the Consumers' Association of Ireland in 2007.

Dr David M Fraser

Retired Consultant Physician, Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline; Past-Chairman Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts; formerly Medical Director, Fife Acute Hospitals Trust.

Carol Madison Graham

Carol Madison Graham writes for the international education market on cultural engagement and conflict. She is an ex US diplomat in Europe and the Middle East and a former executive director of the US UK Fulbright Commission. She has lectured on Middle East history and politics and is proficient in several languages. She is a trustee of the Marshall Scholarships Commission and the International House Trust. She volunteers in her local community as chair of the Police Liaison Group and in various lay positions in the parish.

Jeremy Holmes

Chief Operating Officer of Universities UK, former Chief Executive & Registrar of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and Managing Director of the Economists Advisory Group; management consultant; board member of several arts organisations.

Lynne Lamont

Lynne is an investment manager and Head of Charities for Scotland and Northern Ireland with Brewin Dolphin. She has close involvement with many charities and is experienced in dealing with financial, investment and regulatory issues.

Bill Livingstone

Chairman of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts, Former Editorial Director, Dunfermline Press Group; Past Chairman, Society of Editors (Scotland.)

Douglas Scott

Chief Executive, Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Associations; Past President, Rotary Club of West Fife; Trustee of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts.

Dr David Smith OBE

Formerly Chief Executive, Dunfermline Building Society; Formerly Convener of Court and Chairman, Finance Committee, University of Edinburgh; formerly Vice-Chairman, Scottish Opera; Board Member, NHBC. Past Chairman now Trustee of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts and Trustee of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

Jane Steele

From January 2006, Head of Research and Evidence, General Teaching Council for England; previously Head of Public Interest Research, Office for Public Management.

David Walker

(Convener of the Audit and Risk Sub-Committee.) David is a qualified accountant. He is also a trustee of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts and an active member of Dunfermline Round Table.

Robin W Watson

Director of Watson Burnett Architects and active in a wide range of charitable and community organisations. Vice Chair of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts.  

Ian Wilson

Regional Manager with a German Manufacturing Company,Trustee of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trusts. Past Chairman NASC Scotland & Northern Ireland; Past Chairman Dunfermline Round Table.

Strategic direction for the work of the Trust is given by its Board of Trustees under our President William Thomson CBE, the great grandson of Andrew Carnegie, our Chair, Melanie Leech, and Vice Chair Angus Hogg.

The Board, with advice from Martyn Evans the Trust’s Chief Executive:

  • analyses and propose potential activities including research, policy and practical development to create an annual workplan
  • ensures there is clear and transparent evaluation of the impact of the outputs from the annual plans
  • Makes decisions when to cease the activity in an efficient manner.
  • Requires regular updates of annual plan progress with interim approval being sought for changes needed as circumstances change
  • Oversees effective project management procedures initiated by the Chief Executive with business cases being prepared and requiring approval by Trustees
  • Keeps the governing structure of the Trust under continued review.
